d91f105e-26c8-4fbd-8c19-02dd66f56ca9 Uloma Ogba Gender and Learning Specialist- Migration and Remittances at UNCDF | Co-Founder at Give Girls A Chance | Founder at Launch Africa "Set clear expectations at the beginning: defining what the mentoring relationship looks like for both of you." Uloma Ogba, is a Nigerian, Gender and Financial Inclusion Specialist, and cofounder of Give Girls A Chance, an organisation dedicated to increasing young girls' access to quality education in Nigeria. Based in USA, Uloma is a second-time mentor under the WIAN Mentorship Programme committed to applying the skills and knowledge she has gained over the years, to supporting others; particularly young women who are just starting out in the international affairs field. During the 2020 Mentorship Programme, Uloma mentored SC. Based in Canada, with 3-4 years of working experience, SC holds an undergraduate degree in Policy focused on International Development from Carleton University. SC was a mentee under the Early Career Mentorship Programme, seeking to hear the experiences of a woman who came from a similar background as her - from an immigrant family, who had to work independently to find her own career because she initially lacked access to a social network to help in her career. SC showed interested in accessing professional networking opportunities, as well as improving her employability and career progression skills. During the 1-1 monthly sessions conducted as part of the mentorship programme, Uloma facilitated confidence building sessions with SC and successfully coached her to ask for and secure a salary increment in addition to a new job title. Uloma emphasised the importance of self-presentation and knowing how to package and present one’s experience. One thing Uloma emphasised with SC was helping her understand that volunteer experience counts as experience. She helped her mentee craft descriptions of her volunteer experience and professionally package the work she had done. They talked through several job descriptions and she helped SC tailor some of what she had done to match a cover letter and CV to the job description. Uloma coached SC to understand that even if one does not have the exact number of years of experience indicated on the job description, one may have valuable elements in educational qualifications and internship experience that would meet this requirement. She tried to help SC understand what the hiring manager would be looking for. Uloma also shared valuable pieces of advice such as, “Men tend to oversell themselves, while women won’t apply when they meet 80% of what’s in the job description". Uloma coached her mentee to demonstrate that she met at least 50% of the job description and demonstrate that she had the aptitude or potential to meet the remaining 50%. Since completing the WIAN programme, SC has decided to enter a master’s graduate program as she learned through the job application process that she needed certain educational qualifications to pursue the career path she was interested in. To Uloma, the role of a mentor has helped with her own career. It has helped her look back at her own career journey. Prior to taking on this role, Uloma did not think critically about her own journey and where she was heading. In order to support mentees, career introspection and big picture career thinking is necessary and at the same time has been useful for Uloma and her career in the education of young girls. In her own words Uloma provides fellow mentors with advice on how to effectively mentor junior professionals in International Affairs. She says, “Setting the clear expectations at the beginning: defining what a mentoring relationship looks like to the mentee; defining what the mentee hopes to get out of it. And then keeping the tangible objectives in mind. Without that structure, it could have become more informal coaching, or venting, without an incentive or push to check up and work on something". With these objectives in mind, if Uloma and her mentee worked on something in a 1-1, there was follow up. There were things to check on to see if things were working or not working (in terms of e.g., if an application resulted in an interview or not). She urges one to, "Follow up, so that you know what to change the next time, if it didn’t work well". By the end, the mentee developed very specific things (about the way to present herself) that suited her personality. Setting the expectation that the mentee would initiate topics 2-3 days before was important, so that Uloma was able to prepare. < BACK TO CASE STUDIES

- Anna's Story | WIAN
b92259c3-8855-40eb-9fb4-8a4deec58405 Anna Crawford Senior Consultant - Innovation and Inclusive Growth at IMC Worldwide “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and take advantage of your mentor's expertise!” Anna Crawford was one of our mentees on WIAN’s 2018/19 graduate Mentorship Programme. She has a BA Hons Sociology [International] degree from the University of Leeds with a year at McGill University (Canada) and an MSc in Development Management from LSE. Anna had under 1 year of professional experience upon starting the scheme. She applied for the mentorship scheme in order to learn more about the industry, to refine her future career direction, build confidence in applying for jobs, and to become more aware of the opportunities available. She was paired with SK, a Country Director from Plan International Vietnam who works to deliver the international development strategy in Vietnam. During the scheme Anna had monthly 1-1 sessions with her mentor via Skype and emailed regularly. In order to benefit her professional development, Anna sought support for different job applications. SK was able to suggest minor changes to Anna's CV and also reviewed Anna's written job applications before they were submitted. Anna also conducted mock interviews with her mentor SK. These were tailored for specific job vacancies Anna had applied for. SK asked questions that were likely to come up in the real interview, and then provided Anna with thorough feedback afterwards. These mock interviews were very helpful in improving Anna's confidence and prepared her for potential talking points in each interview. The two most valuable insights Anna gained from the scheme are increased confidence and a clearer idea of a future career path. During the final month of the mentorship scheme, Anna secured a job as Regional Assistant Consultant - Africa and Caribbean at IMC Worldwide. The confidence gained by her mentoring relationship, the increased awareness of opportunities, and improvement in general industry knowledge all contributed towards Anna applying for this role that she may not have previously been aware of or considered as suitable. As advice for future mentees, Anna said: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and take advantage of your mentor's expertise!” Anna also advised: “Don’t have a narrow view of mentorship, you should go into the relationship with an open mind, as mentorship is much broader than you may initially think”. < BACK TO CASE STUDIES

In particular, Andrea wished to impart industry-relevant knowledge and offer mentees useful tips on how influence can be deployed for the greater good. Andreea was paired with two mentees on our early-career programme; LC and GN. One of her mentees was based in Brussels and the other in Chicago. During the scheme Andreea skyped with both of her mentees regularly. During the scheme, Andreea relocated to Brussels, and from then on was able to meet with her Brussels-based mentee in person. Andreea was able to provide her mentees with advice on specific job applications and interview nerves, including how to frame experiences in a productive way for the purpose of any interview. When requested, Andreea reviewed her mentees’ CVs and job applications and provided feedback. As well as imparting general industry knowledge, Andreea also recommended specific resources and organisations to her mentees that might be useful for building professional skills. Within her mentorship relationship, Andreea also found it important to emphasise the enjoyment of the journey of building a career in international affairs rather than solely focusing on the destination. Andreea found participating in the scheme enormously satisfying. She remarked that she herself could have done with this kind of support early in her career, so it made Andreea feel good to contribute in a way that she may also have appreciated at the beginning of her career. Andreea said that the mentorship scheme was an entirely positive experience. “It is satisfying to have the opportunity to share insights, give a sense of what is out there, and encourage early-career women to find what has meaning for them. It felt right to help women with those specific challenges, there is a sense of doing what is right.” Andreea remarked that it was an enlightening process, with fresh insight gained from her mentees. Andreea stated that the kinds of people attracted to participating in the scheme as a mentor are already likely to be open-minded, empathetic, and well-meaning. When asked to offer up advice for future mentors, Andrea said that as she experienced no frustrations and didn’t face any barriers, offering advice would be inauthentic because she had no challenges. She urges other prospective mentors to enroll in the scheme and offer support, because “the benefits are meaningful for both mentors and mentees”. < BACK TO CASE STUDIES
