Research Assistant, Indo-Pacific

Institute for Peace & Diplomacy (IPD)

Description

This paid internship will hold a range of responsibilities including research support within IPD’s Indo-Pacific program and planning for the Institute’s 2025 Indo-Pacific Strategy Forum. It is supported by the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Conclusion of the internship opens the opportunity for IPD to offer a part-time or full-time contractual engagement.


Eligibility

Meet the requirements of the Canada Summer Jobs Program — i.e.

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment and

  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations


Responsibilities

  • Monitor daily and weekly foreign policy news cycle in domestic and international press, tracking issues of relevance to ongoing program priorities with a focus on the Indo-Pacific

  • Conduct open-source and original research on foreign policy developments in Canada and the United States, geopolitics in the Indo-Pacific, and strategic debates in international affairs

  • Assist in drafting, proofreading, copy editing, and publishing reports, policy briefs, white papers, and other analysis from IPD’s publication pipeline

  • Draft compelling public relations prose including but not limited to press releases, website copy, newsletter content, blogs, and social media collateral

  • Assist in organizing IPD’s annual Indo-Pacific Strategy Forum in Ottawa including, programming, private briefings, and post-conference proceedings

  • Perform general administrative work for IPD as required


Qualifications

  • Relevant educational background in political science, public policy, international relations, journalism, or related concentrations — graduate studies preferred

  • Excellent written communication skills in English are required — proficiency in French, Chinese, or at least one Asian language would be an asset

  • Keen interest in the restraint-oriented mission of IPD and familiarity with realist thought, peace studies, and/or diplomacy

  • Strong research skills and responsive attention to media monitoring

  • High level of integrity and track record in handling confidential matters

  • Demonstrable ability to pay strong attention to detail and can ensure accuracy of documents and communications

  • Must work well with others and independently

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, Google Suite, and other management solutions (e.g. Slack, Airtable)
