  • To reduce greenhouse gas emissions from energy and buildings, transport and procurement/logistics in Concern’s head offices as much as possible. This requires support to offices to: identify and prioritise areas for environmental mainstreaming initiatives/carbon reduction actions for proactivity addressing greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact.

  • To reduce the negative environmental impact of offices, structures and assets in each Concern country of operation through identifying and implementing appropriate measures to reduce emissions. This requires support to offices to: adhere to Concern’s policy and carbon reduction targets, as well as donor requirements.

  • To contribute to policy, strategy and implementation changes that create a more sustainable environment and which are balanced with protecting the needs of the poorest people in the world. We will do this through a) bringing our experience and analysis of climate change adaptation and reduction in fragile and conflict affected contexts to the table; and b) communicating our organisational commitment to environmental protection.

  • To optimise the offsetting of Concern’s carbon footprint offset, meaning reduced as much as possible while keeping appropriate to mission and resource availability.

  • Conducting research into best practice in key areas, drawing out implications and guidance for Concern and ways forward (e.g. policy and donor positions across key topics of decarbonisation, energy transition, life cycle assessments, circular economy, resource efficiency, sustainable procurement, etc.).

  • Provide support to the Environment Working Group in terms of drawing up meeting agendas, taking minutes of meetings and following up on actions required and noted.

  • Collect relevant information from different parts of Concern to be able to track progress against intended actions and any targets set.

  • Distil and consolidate such information into formats useful for the Environment Working Group and various managers, including the Senior Management Team, in enabling clear decision-making.

  • Support other Departments in Concern in answering queries from external agencies such as donors, networks and the media in relation to Concern’s actions on climate change and towards a sustainable environment.

  • Support the collection, tracking and consolidation of data and information related to the organisational carbon footprint and monitoring this.

  • Provide support to any additional necessary actions to support the roll-out of the environment strategy, e.g. hiring of key staff members, induction, preparation of materials for external representation or fundraising etc

Experience, Skills and Qualifications

  • At least Masters’ level degree in an appropriate discipline with experience in sustainability, environmental science, natural resource management, environmental management or other related field.

  • At least three years’ experience, either in: a) a climate change mitigation role; b) a pan-organisational coordination role with content complexity; or c) a pan-organisational management role.
