
Director of Editorial Programs
Pulitzer Center
The Pulitzer Center is hiring a Director of Editorial Programs to help oversee its journalism initiatives globally. The Director will work closely with the Executive Editor and other team members to shape the editorial vision and strategy of the Center and to develop creative synergies and collaboration with the Center’s engagement teams that expand the reach and impact of the journalism we support.
Distributed in five continents, the Pulitzer Center’s Editorial team empowers a vibrant network of journalists and newsrooms in more than 100 countries to pursue in-depth, high-impact reporting projects. We provide financial and editorial support, coordinate cross-border reporting networks, and develop innovative methods to report on a range of topics, from AI accountability to climate change, health and human rights.
The Director of Editorial Programs develops and leads editorial initiatives, manages part of the editorial team, and helps ensure that the projects we support meet the highest journalism standards, achieve maximum impact, and engage diverse audiences. We are looking for an enterprising and strategic journalist with superb editorial judgement, collaboration and people skills, and a track record managing diverse teams and complex projects.
Responsibilities
Project and team management
Develop and manage new initiatives and programs that help the Center remain a leader in in-depth, innovative journalism with impact.
Identify and recruit strong journalists, newsrooms, and reporting projects from around the world for Pulitzer Center programs
Manage a vibrant portfolio of reporting projects, including those connected to the Center’s Your Work/Environment initiative.
Connect the journalists we support with partners and resources that boost their stories and maximize their impact.
Design and facilitate in-person and virtual team meetings and create a learning environment for our team and the journalists we support.
Develop and maintain relationships with a range of media outlets, universities and other partners.
Help improve the Center’s systems to track and record impact and ensure that impact is communicated effectively to the public, to donors and to other stakeholders.
Supervise and manage 2-4 members of the Editorial team, supporting them to grow and achieve their goals.
Cross-team and administrative work
Support the development of the Editorial team annual budget and track spending in close collaboration with the Executive Editor and the Finance team.
Contribute to fundraising efforts and donor relations and reporting as needed.
Represent the Editorial team in managers meetings and other strategic settings internally and externally.
Work closely with the Pulitzer Center’s education and outreach teams to maximize communication and coordination.
Support the work of the editorial admin team, ensuring efficiency and transparency in payments, data collection, and other processes vital to the success of our grantees and fellows.
Support the work of the Publishing team to ensure that stories on our website meet the highest journalism standards.
Represent the Pulitzer Center in select events that bring our journalists and their work to our network of schools, universities, and seminars/conferences.
Qualifications
Eight to ten years of experience leading enterprise, in-depth reporting projects
Eight to ten years of experience recruiting and managing diverse teams of journalists.
The ability to think of strategic and proactive solutions to challenges and the drive to innovate.
The skills to act as an adviser and coach and to collaborate in multidisciplinary and global teams.
Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
The ability to work independently and to have an open and collaborative management style.
A demonstrated interest in and appreciation for civic engagement and education as amplifiers of great journalism.
A global outlook and strong journalism networks around the world.
Strong meeting design and facilitation skills.
Superb English writing and communication skills. Familiarity with other languages would be helpful and should be noted in the application.
Cross-culture sensitivity and the ability to navigate different backgrounds, time zones, and work styles with grace.
Experience in environmental/climate change reporting is a plus.
The Center uses an established compensation philosophy in administering compensation. Offers are determined based on candidate qualifications, related experience, internal equity, and the amount budgeted for the position.
