The International Development Policy and Practice team is a key delivery partner in ActionAid UK’s new strategy to promote a world where women and girls are valued, live free from violence, and can exercise their rights to promote their own economic empowerment, safety, equality and voice. The team is comprised of members supporting financial resource mobilisation, grant/ contract management, programmatic innovation, research and learning towards this end.
A key purpose of the role is to contribute to the development of high-quality research and policy positions rooted in AA programme and evidence, applying feminist principles to research and analysis. The role demands a specialist who will bring demonstrable quantitative and qualitative research skills, networking ability and a spirit of collaboration to ActionAid UK as it delivers on its new 5-yearStrategy –Together with women and girls.
The successful applicant will have a good knowledge of women’s rights issues within International Development as well as research experience of relevant issues gained in a public policy, NGO or academic environment. Excellent written communication skills and knowledge of relevant data sources for the type of policy work ActionAid does are essential requirements.
Over the next twelve months a key focus for this role will be to lead on the completion and roll out of a tool to help young women activists engage with macroeconomic policies and to support the continuation of our project on women and work. More generally, the role provides ongoing research and policy support to the broader team across our portfolios on Violence Against Women and Girls, Women’s Economic Rights and Adolescent Girls’ Empowerment to underpin ActionAid UK’s advocacy and programmatic work.
Role and Responsibilities
Policy Analysis & Research
Support the implementation of the new policy identity aligned to AAUK new strategic objectives
Undertake policy analysis and research
Undertake qualitative and quantitative pieces of desk based, and on request field-based policy or campaign related research.
Analyse research findings to help shape policy recommendations.
Plan and manage policy projects with supervision, including research taking place within developing countries.
Ensure policy research is informed by a strong southern feminist analysis and AA programme work, working with AA staff and other partners in the developing world.
Ensure policy research is grounded in a strong feminist women's rights analysis and framing'.
Undertake regular monitoring of policy and political developments in assigned focus areas
Policy Promotion & Representation
To support ActionAid UK’s contribution to Federation-wide initiatives aligned to AAUK new strategy.
Write on request blog posts and use other social media tools to communicate ActionAid policy and thinking.
With supervision, communicate ActionAid policy through writing articles, online debate
Communicate ActionAid’s policy in public forums through public speaking
Network with colleagues in other NGOs and the wider development policy community.
Support with the organisation of policy and political events
Advocacy and campaigns
Provide policy support on request in AAUK advocacy, campaign development and delivery.
Support colleagues in preparing submissions, reports and presentations on our issues.
Write briefings and reports for other staff and for external use.
Attend policy and political events and lobby meetings.
Contribute to the development of advocacy and campaign tactics.
Work with AA International staff and country programmes to implement joint advocacy projects and strategies.
Experience and Qualifications
Good knowledge of international development / women’s rights issues
An understanding of the importance of women’s rights in development ideally in the field of research or policy.
An understanding of UK and international politics in the field of international development
Experience of using social media in a professional context
Experience of campaigning or advocating for social change.
Commitment to ActionAid’s values, including promoting women’s rights
Experience of research on relevant issues gained in a public policy, NGO or academic environment
Excellent written and oral communication skills, in particular the ability to translate complex material into concise and engaging communications
Knowledge of a range of qualitative and quantitative research techniques
Knowledge of relevant global data sources on international development
Ability to work in teams and achieve shared objectives
Proven computer literacy with the ability to adopt new digital platforms
Ability to travel overseas (up to 6 weeks per year)
Experience of working in Southern countries or closely with people in Southern countries
Fluency in French and/or a second language spoken in developing countries, in addition to English.
